So I went to the MoMA this weekend. I went to check out the Tim Burton Exhibit, but didn't end up seeing it. Not exactly because the tickets were sold out, but on top of that I had to ask myself: I spent $15 to see his movie Alice and Wonderland ... should i spend $12 to see his art exhibit? My answer is no thanks. Maybe it is better than his latest movie, but I'm not interested.
I have always had a love-hate relationship with museums... because sometimes they bore me, and other times I enjoy them... but I figured I can just read about and see pictures later of his exhibit and be happy with that.
One exhibit I did see that initially made me very angry was the Mariana Abramovic Exhibit that the whole top floor is dedicated to.
I had heard a little bit about it - that there is a part where you pass between two naked people - and that is an art piece. Heard why it was interesting (because people noticed how awkward it is to pass between naked people or something like that...) and I thought it was creative... BUT I wasn't a big fan of her other stuff.
For example, there was a video of her screaming a lot.. not sure what kind of message she was going for, or what the point of it was at all, but I guess that is okay for some people. BELOW is actually one piece that I thought was alright.

THE MAIN reason I was turned off by her art is becuase I felt it was getting a lot of attention simply for the shock factor. "ohhh there naked people and boobs and pictures of blood and bones." I kind of felt like a lot of her ideas I could come up with when I am Really High off marijuana and involve little thought process. But on the flip side people are analyzing her art like it's new, creative and revolutionary, and the whole time I was looking at these adults like Where the fuck were you when the 60's and the 70's were happening? I felt like this shit was a summary of time period, but I didn't understand why her art is so special that it deserves a WHOLE FLOOR... what about the other artists who dropped acid daily and were naked during her same time?
Anyways... I must say some of her stuff I did like, well like is a little strong, so I guess some of her pieces I did respect... but a lot of it I didn't respect, or at least think was as creative and new as other people may have thought. One reason I kind of respect her is because I looked her up and found out (first of all she's a performance artist so the real-live people and videos make sense) but she is pretty real about this shit. What I mean is she is about what she does. She did a performance a while back where she played that game where you place your hand down and stab a knife in between the open spaces , you can wikipedia it for details , but I was like okay that's kinda cool that you put yourself through this weird shit. BUT I DONT really "like" or "enjoy" her art because it is mindless to me. I don't look at her art and think about it much, maybe because I am stupid, but I find myself in this NEW REVOLUTIONARY exhibit surrounded by other people watching a video of two people slapping each other continuosly and i ask myself: HAVE ANY OF THESE PEOPLE TYPED IN SLAP FEST ON YOUTUBE ?? that is funny and entertaining yes, but does it provoke questioning and interpretation the way the paintings on the 4th floor did? absolutely not.
VERDICT. Go to MoMA, get culture in your life, see the Mariana Abramovic exhibit and give your respects to the 60's and 70's because that was a wild time in the U.S.A. ... BUT don't be surprised if your looking at this art THAT A WHOLE FLOOR IS DEDICATED TO and wonder why the hell is a WHOLE FLOOR dedicated to this silly shit?

That the poster for Mariana's Exhibit at MoMA and my Lady successfully expressing exactly how I felt about it.
